Hazards
Electricity
Consequences
- Operatives coming into contact with a live conductor.
- Site users from contact with live service/equipment.
Control Measures
- Sub-contractor's competence to be ascertained before work commencing on site.
- Installation to be certified before being brought into use.
- Temporary electric supplies to be designed and planned to allow for load requirements, environmental considerations, compatibility of equipment, and progress of work.
- Lockable supply cabinets to form part of the system with controlled keys.
- Adequate, suitable signage to warn of hazards to be displayed on units.
- Trip hazards to be avoided by the suitable routing of cables.
- Permit to work system to be utilized if working on live systems. Working Lone is not advised and allowed on live electrical systems.
GENERATORS
If a Mains Voltage Supply (VMS) is not available and an Alternating Current (AC) generating set is to be utilized during the construction process particular care is required to make sure that it is installed safely:
- Generators need to be earthed, by bonding the neutral to the frame and connecting to the earth
- The impedance of the bonding needs to be low enough to ensure the correct operation of protective devices (fuses, circuit breakers, etc.)
- Sensitive Earth Fault Protection (EFP) may be mandatory if earthing conditions are difficult.
