Stepladder Safety Induction

What this Toolbox Talk Covers:

These toolbox talks uploaded by QHSE Documents cover how to use a stepladder safely. Stepladders are generally used in the MEP and general construction industry, but they need very careful use. They are not developed and made for any degree of side loading and are comparatively easily overturned.

Avoid over-reaching. This is a shocking fact that every year, many people have been killed getting down from workplaces such as loft staircase spaces when they have stepped onto the top step of a stepladder which then overturned.

  1. Ensure stepladders are positioned on level ground and used following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Do not use makeshift or homemade ladders or carry out makeshift repairs to a damaged ladder.
  3. Make sure all four feet of the ladder are on a firm, dry, level surface.
  4. Make sure to clear the ladder floor surrounding before climbing the stepladder.
  5. Make a proper and careful inspection and observe the ladder closely for any damage or loose parts.
  6. Only use stepladders ladders in a fully open position.
  7. Properly secure and lock the side braces and cross braces before climbing up the ladder.
  8. Never try to use a stepladder as a straight ladder in a folded and leaning condition.
  9. Always wear proper footwear with good tread when climbing.
  10. Do not stand on the top two steps of the ladder unless they are designed for standing.
  11. Watch for people working under or around the ladder.
  12. Keep your body centred on the middle of the ladder.
  13. Do not lean to reach items while standing on the ladder.
  14. Get someone to assist you when working with a ladder.
  15. Avoid lifting or carrying any heavy items while climbing up or down the ladder.
  16. Use a ladder made from non-conductive material for electrical work.
  17. Do not use stepladders to support work platforms.

Discussion Leader’s Duties:

Get a 2-Numbers stepladder (1-ladder with some damages & other complete and secure) that you can give good and responsive ladder induction to your team and employee during the discussion to demonstrate key points.

Discussion Notes:

Make a comprehensive and detailed discussion on the health & safety guidelines and tips above and review multiple negative outputs that could result from failure to practice these ladder tips.
