PROJECT SITE SAFETY
EMPLOYEES RESPONSIBILITIES
- Everyone is responsible, not only for their Health and Safety on site but also responsible for the health and Safety of those people working around them.
- Accidents, Incidents and Near misses are Avoidable If you have the right attitude and support for health and safety.
- If you don’t work safely….and injure (or worse) yourself, or others. Think of the consequences. Your family…. your friends…how will they react… long term effects?
- The greatest gift you can give to your family is your SELF!
- All personnel (including visitors and subcontractors) must have received a Project Site Safety Induction before commencing working on site.
- All personnel must always wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (3 items minimum includes, including safety shoes, safety helmet and safety vest.)
- Observe all Project site Safety signs and instructions.
- Observe Project site traffic rules.
- Report all accidents, incidents and near misses, no matter how small, or incidental, to the site Safety Officer.
- Work areas should be kept as clear as possible of unnecessary materials and waste. Use the Bins provided.
- The use in possession of or being under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited.
- Do not remove, deface, or damage safety signs or barriers, they are there for your, and others' safety.
- Do not operate equipment that you are not trained or authorized to use.
- Ensure that you have the right tools and power tools to carry out your job… if you don’t… then ask!
- Only carry out electrical repairs and maintenance if you are qualified to do so
- Strictly NO SMOKING while working and in work areas, designated smoking area is provided and during the break only.
- No running, horseplay or fighting.
- No urinating in the work area; use the toilet areas or chemical toilets provided.
- Keep rest areas and toilets clean.
- Always wash your hands after using the bathroom.
- Ensure that you drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- 3- Essentials & Mandatory items of PPE must always be worn on-site:
- Safety Boots or Shoes (Metal toe caps)
- Hard Hat
- Hi-Visibility vest
- Additional PPE may be required depending on the activity/job or area that you are working in e.g., Gloves, Safety glasses, Dust mask etc. these will be identified in the method statement and risk assessments
- Zero tolerance Project Site
- No Alcohol is to be bought on-site.
- No consumption of alcohol is permitted on site.
- No illegal drugs or substances are to be bought on-site.
- If you are caught under the influence or in possession of drugs or alcohol on-site, you will be removed, and disciplinary action will be taken.
Project Site Traffic Rules
- The maximum site speed limit is 20kmh, but you must always drive with care and attention taking into consideration road and weather conditions.
- Stop if your route ahead is obstructed. If you cannot proceed or remove the obstruction safely yourself, then you must contact your supervisor or foreman to arrange safe removal.
- Only proceed when the route is clear of obstruction, plants, and people.
- At blind corners or busy junctions, sound the horn to warn other drivers of your approach.
- Keep the designated roadways and haulage roads. (No Road driving is permitted).
- Do not damage or remove edges or barriers, they are there for your safety!
Safety Sign’s
- A circle with a red outline and red line from the top left to bottom right indicates that an action is prohibited – “Do Not”
- A triangle with a yellow background is used to indicate a Warning – “Danger /Caution”
- A circle with a blue background is used to indicate that an action is mandatory – “Must Do”
- A green rectangle with green background is Advisory – “Information”
Site Safety Housekeeping
- Keep your work areas clean and tidy
- Remove all rubbish
- Use the appropriate COSHH Bins provided for Hazardous substances.
- Remove all materials that are not required, or being used
- Store equipment and material safely
- Be aware of your work surroundings
- A tidy site is a safe site!!!
- Responsibility of all Employees
- Good Housekeeping involves the maintenance of:
- Sound structures
- Power lines
- Tools and machinery
- Storage area and equipment
- General cleanliness
- Storage and stock need special attention to keep damage to a minimum.
- Clear all empty boxes and wastepaper from the walkways.
- Do not manually lift heavy items single-handedly.
- Stack materials so that they are easily accessible.
- A Tidy Site is a Safe site.
- Do not stack boxes or materials too high.
- Ensure that rubbish does not accumulate on walkways.
- Clean up at the end of a shift.
- Soak up and clean up the oil spill immediately.
- Keep access to fire extinguishers and fire escapes always clear.
Incident and Accident Management
- Timely reporting – as soon as possible report the accident, incident or near misses to the site Safety Officer.
- All accidents, incidents or near misses must be reported to the site Safety Officer and Supervisor in the first instance.
- All injuries that require treatment must be reported to the first aider or site nurse for an initial assessment.

Emergency Procedures
In the event of an emergency or Fire:
- Raise the alarm.
- Contact the emergency services (000).
- Contact the site Safety Officer.
- Tell them who you are, where you are and what the emergency is, and await instruction.
On hearing the alarm:
- Evacuate your working area.
- Evacuate immediately via the signed escape routes.
- Proceed to the nearest assembly point.
- Await instruction – do not return to work/site until specifically told to do so by the Project Manager or the site Safety Officer
